Diploma in Midwifery: Diploma in Midwifery Programme was introduced by the Government under the 2011-2016 Health, Population and Nutrition Sector Development Programme (HPNSDP) in January 2013. To accelerate the production of midwives and introduce them in the remotest communities of Bangladesh, PHD, in partnership with BRAC University launched 3-year ‘Diploma in Midwifery’ course in 2013 as the first midwifery education initiative in Bangladesh’s private sector Funded by UK Government. The most significant characteristics of this initiative has been is introducing a three years direct entry Diploma in Midwifery course in 2013 targeted at vulnerable students from disadvantaged and hard to reach areas and provided free of cost to the students.
Purpose: Educate young students from disadvantaged families by a three years direct entryDiploma Course in Midwifery to provide services in underserved areas contributing to achieve MDGs in reduction of maternal and child mortality.
Objective: Develop a cadre of competent professional Midwives to deliver quality services to mother, new-borns and infants.

This is an Academic programme of PHD. This 3 years Diploma certificate programme is fully residential including all laboratory (skill lab practices), clinical practices (40 delivery independently), management of patients in hospital settings, Community engagement to provide services in rural settings, increasing English Language and skill on computer proficiency. Its curriculum is developed by experts with support from International Midwifery Council. PHD academic site invites students from any corner of Bangladesh, however, priority is given to the students come from South-west Costal belt. The course promotes students from marginalized and low-income families mostly from marginal farmers, families with small business, Rickshaw-pullers, small job holders, such as, security guard, garments workers etc.

Significance of Diploma in Midwifery Course: PHD’s academic site successfully enrolled 180 students in 7th batches out of which 90 students already graduated. They are licenced by Bangladesh Nursing and Midwifery Council (BNMC) and working in Public and Private sectors competently. PHD provides post-course assistance to graduated Midwives to obtain jobs.
